heey

I saw that this post about tutorials I made a really long time ago is sorta going around again, so I just wanted to give a heads up that some of the links/tutorials don’t really work or exist anymore.

The drawfurry site seems to be taken down, but I think it can be used with waybackmachine to get to the tutorials.  It had some really nice info on how to make webcomics.

It also seems like the Creative First Aid Kit by Yasahime was taken down too, but I looked around and it can be viewed here.

as for the conceptart forum stuff, I don’t what’s happening with that one haha

Anonymous whispered,

How did you get so good at anatomy? Any tips?

auhh I feel like anatomy is one of my weakest points, but I’ll try to help and point out info if I can.

I think ultimately something that’ll help is practicing from reference. Gesture drawings are good to do!  But also closely observing the body and seeing the different curves, lines, and shapes.  Understanding lighting and shadows is important in this too.

On the subject of shapes, you can also build a person from the skeleton up, so to speak! Simplifying a figure with guidelines and shapes (like circles and stick-figures) and building on top of that can prove pretty helpful as well.  I always start people/faces with guidelines so I don’t end up with an eye where the mouth should be (unless I want it that way heh)

Also, to remember that the body is full of angles! What may seem like a straight line, might really have varying, softer lines that make it up.

ok here’s my usual links to cool people waaay smarter than me X 1 billion

Anatomy Art/Ref Blog (has some inner workings photos like muscles and organs, so if that irks you…just a heads up!)

Anonymous whispered,

Hello!! I've noticed you've been answering quite a few questions about art and such, and I'm sorry for asking this because it has probably been asked many times before, but where do you get your inspiration for colors and color schemes? They're so beautiful and inspiring!! Do you observe other's work, or do you come up with them all by yourself? Thank you!

oh it’s perfectly fine, if I can be of help, then I’m glad!!

The artist that got me focused on coloring has gotta be PK.  I didn’t know much about color theory or choice, but I started to brush up on it after reading her tutorial. So I very much recommend that if you haven’t seen it already! It’s got a lot of information that I use too.

If you’re starting out making color schemes or you’re like me and too lazy to give much thought to it sometimes, another thing you could do is just pick a color that you like a whole lot (and that’s close to a hue involved in your subject) and just experiment with other colors you like to see if they all work well together!

Here’s a few other links and tools that I think are pretty cool!

Hello, Do you by chance have a face tutorial or know of a few really good ones that influenced you?

I’m sorry, I don’t know too many full face tutorials! But I’ll try and compile a few things.

Alexds1 on deviantart does have a pretty nice face and expression information type dealie, which may be helpful in the case of basics and building around.

Face Tutorial

Expression tutorial

One of my faaavorite comic artists also made a huge, very well done tutorial on expressions that I’m still trying to learn from too! It’s super great.

June (awesome person) made a really nice, easy to understand tutorial on help with face profiles, so I think that’d be handy as well!

Also, here’s a little thing with a few do’s and don’ts.

Sorry, I couldn’t be more helpful.  If anything, just observe people’s faces that you think look nice or artists who you think do a good job on certain features!

If anyone knows any other good info/tutorials, please feel free to share!

Portfolio advice

coelasquid:

From someone who makes terrible portfolios

(but knows in theory how they work)

  • Keep them short, 10-15 pieces. The more stuff you have, the more likely your potential employer will get bored and skim over the stuff you really want them to see
  • If you’re on the fence about anything, take it out. Only the best.
  • Don’t apologize for anything or talk about how you could have made it better. The most sympathetic response you’ll get is “then why didn’t you?”
  • If you have a storyboard portfolio it may be a little longer because you don’t want to break up a sequence. Just take the best sequences though, don’t give them a whole film.
  • Some places want a jack of all trades who can fill in any role. Some places want someone to do a dedicated job and only that job. It helps to know what kind of a place you’re applying to and tailor your portfolio to match. (usually bigger studios care more about dedicated jobs, smaller places want people with more diversity)
  • Put in stuff that is original and memorable. Even if you aren’t the most technically proficient, your ideas can still stand out.
  • People remember things that make them laugh.
  • Put your absolute best stuff at the very beginning and the very end, so they start and finish with the best possible impression.
  • You’ll have a better success rate if you apply to places that you know are hiring. Most studios operate on a skeleton crew between big projects and aren’t looking for new staff.
  • Don’t send a new portfolio unless it’s a significantly different. Like at least 75% new material. And hey, if they remember your first application and see what a marked improvement your new one is, they’ll know you’re a quick learner.

Tutorial done done done done

Anonymous whispered,

Wooow do you have any favorite tutorials for hair and clothing? Yours always looks so good! *o*

I’ll probably have to look around a bit for a good hair tutorial ahaa I’m sorry. :c

However this cloth basics tutorial by janemere is amazing. It’s quite a lot of info to take in, but I recommend going over most if not everything that she covers. In the end though, learning to render that kinda stuff is just a whole lotta experimenting and messing around yourself!

101 Projects for Artists and Illustrators

dredsina:

(From http://danidraws.com/)

Don’t know what to do with your extra time? There are plenty of odd jobs and tasks that an illustrator can do in between assignments. If you’re looking for some inspiration, here’s a long list of projects, ideas, and necessary chores to help make your free time more productive.

Tell a Story

Many images are used to help a narrative, and as an illustrator it is important to keep developing this skill in your off-time.

  1. Make a book cover for your favorite classic novel.
  2. Create a series of illustrations that show the passage of time.
  3. Illustrate a song.

Using Real Psychology in Your Writing

USING ARCHETYPES IN YOUR STORIES

Writing Better Romantic Relationships

This series looks at the Anima/Animus archetype, which is most often seen in romantic relationships, and how to use it to create more compelling romantic relationships, regardless of genre. Looks at what the anima and animus are, how they’re formed, and why fiction writers need to understand them. There’s also some and what makes love grow - and how happily ever afters really work.

note that this info might not be the greatest haha

x-oskeleton:

Here you go, a complete tutorial for the thing you see in THIS post! :D

To clarify some things, I understand there might have been some confusion in my saying that it was done with “ink” pens. Indeed, some of these are gel pens, but are still standard pens, just in some unusual colors. I’m in Singapore right now and there are a lot of japanese stationery, which are quite fancy; but other than the opaque white pen, these are pretty basic. There is no photoshopping involved, just a lot of smearing and rubbing and messy fingers. ^___^

The original post was indeed done while I was bored in biology class in high school; as to why I did not get caught/stopped while drawing something so elaborate, let’s just say that all of my teachers have resigned themselves to the fact that I am a doodle machine who cannot be stopped. I get awesome grades, so they can’t complain. XD

Do send me pictures if you decide to try this out, I would really LOVE to see it! If you have any questions, please direct them to my ask box~

(The end result for this one isn’t quite as pretty as in the original post; I don’t exactly have a set of rules to draw this by, so I had to figure out how to do it again. It didn’t turn out quite the same. :<)

Stuff to Share

not sure how many people know about these yet (I’m usually late to parties), but here are some pretty helpful artsy stuff compiled into archived 4chan threads for those of you who don’t.  c:
